Introducing the MacGregor 26
Roger MacGregor began the MacGregor Yacht Corporation in the early 60s as a class project while studying for his MBA at Stanford Graduate school of Business. Spotting a gap in the market for a boat that would meet the needs of the growing number of trailer sailors the company invented a vessel with a retracting keel, followed by an innovative water ballast system that provided the safety of a true keel-boat. These features were combined in a lightweight package that allowed a low horsepower outboard motor to be attached.
Sail Magazine recognised MacGregor as one of the most innovative of the sailboat builders over the last three decades, as the builder who brought affordable sailing to thousands.
Take a tour inside the MacGregor 26
With sleeping room for 6, galley area and a fully-enclosed head, the MacGregor 26 offers a range of amenities and level of comfort unequalled in any other sailing boat of its size.
The weather tight cabin has full standing headroom and comfortable accommodation for family cruising. There is a full double berth at the forward end of the cabin and a fully-enclosed head compartment on the starboard side.
Choose to add the Porta-Potti when ordering your boat. The advantages of the system are endless, including being very easy to use, and easy to keep clean. They keep your boat smelling fresh as there are no holding tanks or hoses to have to clean. A full marine head is an option, but most people prefer the low cost and simplicity of the Porta-Potti. Haven Yachts supply, as an option, a 19 litre SaniPotti, with hold down brackets.
The large galley slides fore and aft and locks in several positions. It has a molded-in sink and an attractive counter, with space for a stove. There is a storage cabinet below the galley, with a door for access.
The dining area has a large solid table that can be lowered to form a single berth with an extra cushion. The back of the rear saloon table seat is removable to allow easy access to the rear berth.
The rear 6'6" berth is about the size of a queen sized bed and has full sitting headroom over a large area.
Large windows make the cabin light and airy, and the foredeck hatch provides lots of ventilation.
The cabin is carpeted, and the hull sides are finished with an attractive, sound dampening, water resistant fabric. The sofa cushions and seat backs are thick and comfortable. They are covered with a high quality vinyl that looks and feels like leather. There is a large storage locker under every seat and berth. There are several places suitable for mounting electronics.
Refrigeration
There is an area in the aft berth, where there is a removable “cut out” part of the mattress which creates a suitable place to store a 12 volt chilly bin. The single storage locker on the starboard side under the aft dining table seat can accommodate a Rubbermaid 22L chilly bin, or could be custom made into a permanent fridge/freezer.
Trailer
A new strong and robust aluminium trailer has now replaced the steel trailer. It is lighter by approximately 90kg which is a big benefit. The deluxe trailer has surge brakes, a galvanised torsion bar axle, aluminium brake calliper holders, zinc plated disc brake rotors and a boarding ladder near the trailer hitch.
Rotating Mast
The mast is shaped like an aerofoil and automatically seeks the proper angle relative to the wind direction. The rotating rig raises and lowers like a conventional mast, and requires no attention when sailing.
